Many exurbs of Maryland and Virginia were severely overbuilt during the lodging bang. Some spots, like Bethesda, Md., were extended over multiple ZIP codes. Once the market softened, devalued properties, specially outside the Beltway, put a lot of homeowners underwater, and were foreclosed upon.
